DLS HISTORY

The Founders of Dynamic Listening Systems
Founded by Ron Minson, M.D. and Kate O'Brien-Minson in 2001, Dynamic Listening Systems, Inc. (DLS) has become recognized as the premier supplier of therapeutic listening technology and training. Dr. Minson first encountered Dr. Alfred Tomatis, the French founder of listening therapy, in his search to help his daughter, who was suffering from dyslexia and depression. The results were so remarkable that Dr. Minson traveled back to Europe to study under Dr. Tomatis and subsequently incorporate the method and equipment into his psychiatric practice.

Over the years, Dr. Minson has refined this methodology and developed the Dynamic Listening Systems technology. Dr. Minson received his degree from UCLA School of Medicine and is board-certified in Psychiatry and Neurology. He served as Chief of Psychiatry for Presbyterian Medical Center and Director of Behavioral Sciences at Mercy Hospital in Denver. He is a co-owner, with Kate O'Brien Minson and Lucy Jane Miller, PhD, of Sensory Therapies and Research (STAR) Center, in Denver, CO. STAR Center combines DLS with occupational therapy.

Dr. Minson has studied a variety of auditory programs, including Auditory Integration Training and Samonas. He also co-developed The Listening ProgramTM, a home-based listening program produced by Advanced Brain Technologies, LLC. Dr. Minson gives presentations nationally and internationally on the intentional application of sound.

A Tomatis-based Approach
Originally an ear, nose and throat physician, Dr. Alfred Tomatis discovered the link between ear and voice early in his career. Initially, he applied his discoveries to help musicians, especially singers, regain audio-vocal control. Dr. Tomatis was surprised to discover reports that both the adults and children were experiencing improved memory, focus, and attention span. In addition, their learning difficulties diminished. Determined to get to the root of these findings, Dr. Tomatis embarked on a lifelong pursuit to understanding the relationship between the ear and its role in communication, learning and brain function. Today, his discoveries provide the basis for all auditory training programs. The physiological and cognitive differences between hearing and listening that he defined form the foundational design of the DLS equipment and training; however, over the past decade Dr. Minson has improved upon the technological component of the original Tomatis method - e.g. the recording quality, frequency range, and stereo delivery - essentially updating the method to take advantage of 21st Century audio technology.

An Introduction, by Dr. Ron Minson
My Initiation
Like many parents of children with learning disabilities, my introduction to listening therapy came through the painful struggles of my daughter, Erica. As parents seeking solutions to her dyslexia and consequent depression, our suffering was no less acute than hers. Despite the specialists, tutors, special-education teachers, medications and other therapies, Erica reached the stage of severe depression at 19 years of age. At that time I heard about the Tomatis Method through an occupational therapist friend. Doubtful, skeptical and fearful of being let down again, we nevertheless ventured to gain help from this seemingly strange approach to therapy. As we (I entered the program with her) went through the program together, we both were amazed at the results. Her depression lifted, her awkwardness and coordination problems began to disappear and she rapidly developed a deeper sense of self-confidence. More animate and talkative, she was able to express her deepest feelings for the first time. She had more energy and required less sleep. Where other therapies failed, the listening program had shown such phenomenal results that I felt compelled to learn more. Not long thereafter I was on my way to France to study with Dr. Alfred A. Tomatis.

Training with Dr. Tomatis
While many of Dr. Tomatis' early theories first garnered criticism and controversy, few professionals today doubt his pioneering genius. Through his work with musicians, Dr. Tomatis discovered a cybernetic loop between the ear and the voice, showing that the voice, language and expression really are under the control of the ear. Through his work with hearing loss among aircraft factory workers, Dr. Tomatis discovered that hearing loss can be psychological as well as physical, and that distortions in hearing can affect the entire body, psyche and nervous system. It was Dr. Tomatis who first wrote about a child's ability to hear and listen in the womb. He also studied the links between the ear and language, dyslexia, learning disabilities and the ability to integrate foreign languages.

My training with Dr. Tomatis in Paris lasted for an intensive 6-weeks, during which time we developed a close personal friendship that lasted until his passing in 2001. Upon returning to the U.S., my wife, Kate, and I started The Center for Inner Change, a clinic based upon Dr. Tomatis' original program. Soon, however, we were faced with a difficult situation. The technology of the Canadian equipment we had was antiquated, the Swiss-made equipment was often faulty, we had no technical support in the U.S., and the sound quality of the old metallic tapes left much to be desired. After consulting with audio engineers and researching new equipment and software options, we built a new prototype. Painstakingly, music was 'treated' to get, with precision, the desired effect. The frequency response was approximately doubled, a person did not have as many interruptions to the music changes throughout a session, alterations were done in real time, and a larger range of filters was available for individualization of the programs. In addition, mono delivery was replaced with stereo. The improved frequency response allowed us to deliver more stimulation in a shorter period of time. We were able to shorten the listening time from the former 120 minutes to 80 minutes without sacrificing efficacy. In short, we feel a huge debt to Dr. Tomatis for his kindness and support over the years, and we are confident he would greet with open arms the technological innovations incorporated by DLS over the past several years.
